ANNOUNCING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE VIRGINIA COMPUTER RECYCLING CONSORTIUM The disability Resource Center of Fredericksburg and the Virginia Assistive Technology System have been working with a consortium of volunteer groups over the past several years to develop a computer distribution program for people with disabilities. The project, 'Virginia Computer Recycling Consortium (VCRC)', has been quite successful in providing over 500 computers to folks in all comers of Virginia. The consortium met on February 9, 1999 to begin formalizing our efforts into a true system. The components of the program include: 1) soliciting computers from local businesses and agencies, 2) rehabilitating them to be sure they are running well, 3) delivering them to consumers, 4) providing troubleshooting technical assistance, and 5) coordinating the consumer with training. We have members in the Norfolk, Danville, Lynchburg, Grundy, Big Stone Gap, Roanoke, Richmond, Roanoke, Fredericksburg and Fairfax areas at present. Not all of the 5 components are in place within each region and any contacts or volunteers would be greatly appreciated. We typically accept 486's or better as well as printers, software and other peripherals. Please call Joey Wallace at VATS for more information at 800-552-5019. |
