The Statewide Independent Living Council is requesting applications for review and recommendation to the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth to fill vacancies opening October, 2008 . To be considered for recommendation for appointment to the SILC please complete and return the attached Application for Gubernatorial Appointment to the Office of the Statewide Independent Living Council by July 8, 2008. Please also include your resume for full consideration. You may also include letters of recommendation. The Council will review your application during our July 17-18, 2008 meetings and identify candidates for recommendation. Please follow the submission instructions below.
The Council is an independent planning body working to increase the impact of Independent Living services in Virginia. The Council is responsible for ensuring that the Commonwealth is providing the appropriate planning, financial support and coordination, and other assistance to appropriately address the needs of citizens with disabilities for independent living services.
The membership is composed of Gubernatorial appointees who represent people with significant disabilities across the state, the interests of Centers for Independent Living, and Independent Living programs and services. Each member of the Council shall serve for a term of 3 years, and may not serve more than two consecutive full terms. The Council shall meet at least four times annually and Appointees are expected to attend all membership meetings. The Council provides reimbursement for reasonable and necessary expenses of attending Council meetings and performing Council duties.
Membership shall be composed of –
· a majority of people with disabilities who are not employed by the State or
by a Center for Independent Living;
1 at least one director of a center for independent living within the State
chosen by the directors of Virginia’s Centers for Independent Living;
2 as ex officio, nonvoting members –
· a representative from the designated State unit; and
1 representatives from other State agencies that provide services for
individuals with disabilities.
